Attachment selection guide
Hydraulic Plate Compactors
Hydraulic plate compactors use a vibrating base plate to compact suitable fill through an excavator-mounted attachment. They are useful where the boom can position a plate into a trench or other restricted working area. The chosen model must suit the carrier and the projectβs required compaction method.
Where a plate compactor fits
A mounted plate works on a placed layer of fill. It does not replace the material specification or the method used to confirm the completed result. Trench width, adjacent structures and access affect whether the plate can work on the intended area without contact with obstacles.
Distinguish a hydraulic plate from a compaction wheel, roller or dedicated ground-improvement tool. These use different working principles. Choose the method required by the ground conditions and construction specification.
Selection criteria
- Plate dimensions and access
- Compare the base dimensions with the trench or work area, allowing the clearance required by the manufacturer and the site plan.
- Carrier and mounting
- Check the exact carrier range, coupler, complete attachment mass and available working geometry. Include any adapter or positioning unit.
- Hydraulic circuit
- Match supply, return and any additional connection to the attachment documentation. Confirm the required settings before operation.
- Material and result
- Define the fill material, moisture condition, placed layer and acceptance criteria. Catalogue specifications alone do not prove that a layer has reached the required result.
Plan the installation and work
Obtain the installation instructions for the actual model and carrier combination. Check hose movement through the intended working positions, access for inspection and the permitted operating method. Avoid transferring operating limits from a similar-looking model.
Coordinate filling and compaction so that each layer can be inspected before it is covered. Establish how the achieved result will be verified for the project. Extra passes do not reliably compensate for unsuitable fill or an excessive layer thickness.
Wear and maintenance
Inspect the base plate, mounting components, vibration isolation elements and hydraulic connections using the service schedule. Investigate looseness, leakage or abnormal vibration before continuing. Keep the attachment supported in its documented storage position during tool changes and maintenance.
Questions before ordering
- Which model is approved for the exact carrier and coupler?
- Can the plate reach the entire required working area?
- What hydraulic settings and return arrangement are required?
- Which service parts and vibration isolation components are available?
