Tree Shears

Tree shears use one or more hydraulic blades to cut through a stem while a frame, clamp or grapple controls the material. This combination allows the operator to fell a tree and retain it instead of letting it fall freely. As a result, shears work well near roads, buildings, fences and other locations where uncontrolled movement would create additional risk.

Manufacturers offer single-blade, scissor and bypass designs. Blade geometry, cutting diameter and hydraulic force determine the practical stem size. However, wood species, moisture, branch structure and cutting height also affect performance. A nominal maximum diameter should therefore not be treated as a guarantee for every tree.

When selecting a shear, check whether the attachment can grip the stem securely before and after the cut. In addition, confirm that the carrier can control the combined weight of the attachment and tree at the intended reach. A lightweight attachment may preserve machine capacity, but the frame still needs enough stiffness for repeated cutting and handling loads.

Felling Heads, Saw Heads and Harvesting Heads

A felling head separates standing timber with a saw, shear or cutting disc. Some units only cut and hold the stem, while accumulating heads collect several small stems before placing them down. Accumulation improves productivity in thinning, biomass harvesting and clearing dense stands of small trees.

Harvesting heads add feed rollers, delimbing knives, measuring wheels and a control system. The head grips the tree, cuts it, feeds the stem through the knives and cross-cuts logs to programmed lengths. Consequently, these attachments require more hydraulic capacity, more control integration and a carrier designed for sustained forestry production.

Grapple saws sit between simple shears and full harvesting heads. They combine a grapple with a chain saw and are often installed on excavators, cranes or tree-care machines. Because the grapple stabilises the branch or stem before cutting, the operator can dismantle trees in sections and place the material more accurately.

Forestry mulchers use a powered rotor fitted with fixed teeth, swinging hammers or flails. Mulchers absorb substantial hydraulic power. Therefore, match the attachment to the carrier’s continuous flow, pressure, cooling capacity and available hydraulic horsepower. A high-flow specification alone does not guarantee successful operation if the machine cannot maintain pressure or control oil temperature during sustained work.

Brush Cutters, Rotary Cutters and Flail Mowers

Brush cutters use blades, chains or cutting discs to remove grass, weeds, reeds, shrubs and lighter woody growth. Rotary cutters cover broad areas efficiently, while flail mowers use many swinging tools to produce a more controlled finish and contain cut material more effectively.

Excavator-mounted mowers reach slopes, ditch banks and areas behind barriers. Skid-steer and loader-mounted cutters work efficiently on accessible ground, while tractor-mounted systems suit long-term roadside, agricultural and municipal maintenance. Select the cutting system according to the dominant vegetation rather than the occasional largest stem. Conversely, a light mower will suffer rapid damage if it regularly meets thick stems, hidden stumps or stone.
